Issue #1424 (Aretha Franklin)
The greatest singer of our life-time, Aretha Franklin was more than just the Queen of Soul, although she was certainly that: She remains the embodiment of the healing power of music, of the joy of the human voice and of Black excellence. She was also one helluva songwriter, a brilliant piano player and an in-comparable interpreter of song. Oh, and a civil rights icon, too. For Black Music Month, all r-e-s-p-e-c-t is due to Ms. Franklin.
